Welcome to the website of The University of Oklahoma Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Team at the John W. Keys Speech and Hearing Center. This site was developed by members of the team for you as a parent of a child with a cleft lip and/or palate. Whether your son or daughter is a newborn or an older child, dealing with the many issues surrounding their care can be confusing and at times overwhelming. It is natural for you to be anxious and to have many questions about your child's immediate needs and his or her long-term care. Our hope is to relieve some of your anxiety by answering many of the questions you may have.
The information contained in the following pages will describe the help that is available for you through The University of Oklahoma Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Team at the John W. Keys Speech and Hearing Center. It will help you to:

bullet

understand the basic care issues connected with cleft lip and cleft palate, such as feeding and nutrition;

bullet

learn about an overall treatment program that includes corrective surgery and, if necessary, treatments related to speech, hearing, orthodontics and your child's emotional health; and

bullet

become an active partner with a medical team of specialists whose care and direction will contribute to your child's healthy development.

While this information will answer many of your questions, we want you to know that members of the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Team are available to answer any further questions you have and to be a resource for you. You don’t have to wait for your next appointment to contact us. Please feel free to call or write to any member of our team at any time.
